Professional Development

The Michigan Department of Education has outlined the requirements for continuous professional development for educators.

MASP offers a Fall Conference and a spring Critical Issues Conference where one can obtain state board continuing education credits. Attendance at NASP annual convention is another method of obtaining credit hours.

Note: MASP will no longer be sponsoring SB-CEU activities for individual school psychologists SB-CEUs will continue to be provided at MASP conferences.

From the Michigan Department of Education Rules

...Certification of School Psychologist is under the regulation of the Michigan Department of Education. A certificate shall be valid for 5 years. All certificates issued within a calendar year expire 5 years from June 30th of that year.

The renewal of a school psychologist certificate requires the completion of 6 semester credit hours of academic credit at any 4-year college or university or Michigan community college recognized by the department, or the equivalent in approved 18 state board continuing education units. Credit shall be toward an individual's professional development as a school psychologist. A combination of semester credit hours and state board continuing education units may be used to meet requirements for renewal. Three state board continuing education units are equivalent to 1 semester credit hour.

SB-CEU Information for Michigan School Psychologists

  1. Michigan School psychologists must earn 18 SB-CEU's (180 contact hours) or 6 semester hours every 5 years to maintain School Psychology Certification in Michigan. Any combination of SB-CEUs and semester hours may be used. 1-SBCEU=10 contact hours. 1 semester hour is equivalent to 3 SB-CEUs.
  2. Retain your certificates of completion after attending any workshops or conferences.
  3. At the time of recertification, you must complete the Advanced Certificate Renewal Form indicating the sponsor, certificate number, etc. If you do not have all of your certificates, you may request transcripts* from M.A.S.P. or other SB-CEU sponsors. There usually are fees attached to these requests.
  4. If you wish to obtain a copy of your transcript, please write to MASP, C/O Sharon Petty, 7047 N. Pebblecreek Road, W. Bloomfield, MI 48322. The fee is $10.00 for members and $20.00 for non-members. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope, your full name (indicate any name changes), address, and social security number in all correspondence.
  5. Once you have received your certificate from the Michigan Department of Education, you may begin collecting SB-CEUs for the next five year cycle.
