SESSION DESCRIPTION: Do you enjoy helping children with academic, emotional, and social skill concerns? Do you like to collaborate with others to promote positive outcomes for students? If so, the field of School Psychology may be an exciting career opportunity for you. The Michigan Association of School Psychologists (MASP) is hosting a School Psychology webinar. This will provide an overview of the field of School Psychology with professors from the field and School Psychologists who have worked in a variety of settings. The webinar will also include a discussion panel with the Michigan School Psychologist of the Year and a School Psychology graduate student.

About the presenters:

Jana Aupperlee:

Jana is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, a Licensed Psychologist in Michigan, and a Health Service Psychologist. She is Coordinator of the EdS Program in School Psychology at Michigan State University and the Training Co-Director of the Mid-Michigan Psychology Internship Consortium. She teaches a variety of school and practice-based courses and collaborates with local school psychologists in the supervision of practicum students.

Tracy Hobbs, NCSP:

Tracy has been a school psychologist for 42 years and currently serves as MASP's Membership Chair; he also serves on the NASP Board of Directors as the Strategic Liaison for Professional Development. Tracy spent the first 30 years of his career employed by the Lake Orion Community Schools, and since "retiring" in 2010, has provided long-term substitute services for several school districts across the state. Tracy lives in Lake Ann and most recently worked for the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District.

Michele Millhouse:

Michele has worked as a school psychologist for seventeen years in the urban, suburban, and rural setting across all grade levels in two states (Michigan and Pennsylvania). Michele earned an Ed.S. from Lehigh University and a B.S. in Special Education from Kent State University. In addition to her work as a school psychologist, Michele has served as the MASP School Psychologist Shortage Committee Chair and has held the position of Region 13 Directors for the past two years. Michele has participated in committees through the Michigan Department of Education related to supporting parents of children with special needs, diversity/equity in education, and mental health services during COVID-19. Further, Michele participated in the creation of the Michigan Department of Education Return to School Mental Health Toolkit to support educators, students, and parents during COVID-19. She also has served as a member of the School Based Mental Health Committee. This organization consists of board members from the Michigan School Counselor Association, the Michigan Association of School Psychologists, and the Michigan Association of School Social Workers. As a board member of MASP Michele has assisted lawmakers in Michigan in legislation related to suicide prevention, threat assessment and the provision/expansion of mental health support in our state.

Joe Sbar:

Joe Sbar is currently a school psychologist with the Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District in Sault Ste. Marie and throughout his career, has served as a clear example of service to children, families, schools, and the profession as both a practitioner and an advocate. His leadership has been evident through his work implementing multitiered system of supports (MTSS) through his participation as a member of the ISD-Level Regional MTSS Implementation Team and the Joseph K. Lumsden Anishnabe PSA District MTSS Implementation Team. Joe has provided leadership in the area of crisis response as the Lead Organizer of Eastern Upper Peninsula PREPaRE Crisis Response Team. Joe has also worked to address the critical shortage of school psychologists in Michigan by developing and providing presentations to undergraduate students to recruit future school psychologists to the field as well as by serving as a highly effective supervisor to school psychology interns.

Shelbie Spear:

Shelbie is a second year student in the Doctoral Program in School Psychology at Michigan State University. Shelbie’s current research centers teacher implementation of evidence-based practices for working with refugee youth and refugee youth’s perspectives on their experiences in schools and community-based programs. She received the Summer Research Development Fellowship in 2021 to pursue these interests. Shelbie currently serves on the Student Editorial Board for School Psychology Review, is the president of the Michigan State University chapter of the Student Affiliates in School Psychology, and is the co-chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee within the School Psychology program.

Tracy Hobbs

Tracy is starting his 44th year as a school psychology practitioner. He earned his undergraduate degree at Eastern Michigan University, his graduate degree from Eastern Illinois University, and following his internship in Urbana, Illinois, returned to Michigan where he spent the first 30 years of his career with the Lake Orion Community Schools. Following his retirement in 2010, Tracy returned to the workforce the following year to provide long-term substitute coverage for a school psychologist on maternity leave and has continued to provide these services, in a variety of settings across the state, since that time. He is currently providing long-term school psychology substitute services for Northwest Education Services in Traverse City. Tracy serves as MASP’s Membership Chair as well as the Region 2 Alternate Director and previously served as MASP President. Tracy has also held several leadership positions within NASP (National Association of School Psychologists) including 6 years as a Strategic Liaison and member of the NASP Board of Directors.

DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES:

Suicide prevention and risk management in school settings must go beyond crisis response by including a deep understanding of how trauma shapes behavior, access to support, and student well-being. This session will explore how a trauma-informed lens can transform how school mental health professionals and educators approach suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. Grounded in culturally responsive practices, participants will examine how to recognize trauma-related risk factors, build protective environments, and support both students and staff through all components of comprehensive suicide prevention. Attendees will leave with practical tools and strategies that center connection and strengthen school-wide suicide prevention efforts.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

Understand the relationship between trauma-informed care and suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention in school settings.
Identify key trauma-related risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors that influence suicide risk among K-12 students.
Apply trauma-informed strategies to support students and school communities during suicide-related crises and after tragic incidents of death by suicide.
Develop culturally responsive approaches to mental health related misconceptions to promote help-seeking behaviors in school communities.
Begin strengthening collaboration among school mental health professionals, staff, caregivers, and community partners to create safer and more supportive environments for youth.

PRESENTER INFORMATION:

Roddia Hill, PsyD has a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in Forensic Psychology and a masters in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in trauma. Additionally, she is trained in CAMS, the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality with experience in Trauma focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Cognitive Processing Therapy.

In her role, as Training Manager for the Tier 3 Suicide Prevention and Risk Management team at TRAILS (Transforming Research into Action to Improve the Lives of Students), Roddia helps bring effective programming to schools that centers cultural humility and evidence based practices to support the development of safer communities.

She has a decade of experience and expertise in direct mental health care, crisis intervention, curriculum development, risk management training and a deep commitment to supporting at-risk youth of all identities.

PRESENTER INFORMATION:

Tracy Hobbs, NCSP: Tracy has been a school psychologist for 44 years and currently serves as MASP's Membership Chair and NASP's Convention Committee Co-Chair. For the last two years, due to vacancies in the school social work discipline at his ISD, Tracy has been employed as a direct service provider for students, fulfilling SSW/Psych services written into their IEPs.
Sara Lewandowski, PhD: Sara has been a school psychologist for 15 years in Shiawassee County. She currently serves as the Region 6 Director and MASP’s Mental Health Committee Chair. Sara supports her districts in collecting social-emotional screening data, and coaches using that data to drive Tier I curriculum implementation, as well as identifying students who are in need of additional Tier II and III support.
Lauren Mangus, PhD, LP, NCSP: Lauren has been a school psychologist for nearly two decades and has been practicing as a licensed psychologist in an outpatient hospital setting for six years. Lauren has had a variety of experiences working in school, university, clinical, and hospital settings, with engaging in both direct and indirect mental health services within an ecological framework. Lauren is currently MASP president and MASP Communications Committee Chair.
Charlene Mangi, MEd, SpA., NCSP: Charlene has been a school psychologist for 11 years and currently serves as MASP’s President Elect, and is the Lead School psych for her district. She currently works in three elementary schools. Mental Health support is a passion for her, and over the past 5 years she has consistently found ways to fit in direct service provision in the form of TRAILS CBT groups, a Drop-in Mindfulness program, Self-Regulation/Social-Skills groups for younger learners and Executive Functioning training for older students. She has also collaborated with leaders and teachers across the district to implement a Tier 1 SEL curriculum district-wide.
Lisa Khoury, EdS: Lisa has worked in schools for 24 years. She is currently assigned to a High School, and also supports the district’s Community Campus Program for young adults (ages 18-26). In addition to consulting with district staff on mental health (MH) concerns and meeting with students individually to coach them through escape-oriented behavior, Lisa has supported the development and implementation of several MH initiatives including creating and maintaining a regulation room, designing a MH webpage for the district, providing content for MH-related topics for the school newspaper, addressing school refusal interventions, organizing TRAILS groups, providing suicide awareness presentations, risk assessment, and crisis interventions. Lisa and her team provide wrap-around care, facilitate grieving rooms for students, and take shifts at funerals to provide onsite MH supports for school families.
Tom Harwood, EdD: As a MDE fully certified school psychologist, Tom has been working in the field for the past 40 years as a clinical psychologist, school psychologist, and school administrator. He currently provides therapeutic support to secondary students in the Royal Oak Schools with funding from the State of Michigan MDE 31n grant. The support provided occurs for students in general education who may be demonstrating mental health challenges such as: Anxiety, Depression, Eating Disorders, ADHD, Sleep Disorders, Obsessive-Compulsion, Suicidal Thoughts, and Significant Trauma.

The session is specifically designed to discuss the roles of the school psychologist in implementing, evaluating, and sustaining a comprehensive mental health system within their schools and districts.

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

PRESENTER INFORMATION:

Sara Lewandowski, Ph.D., is a School Psychologist and MTSS Systems Mentor for Shiawassee RESD. She is also the Region 6 Director and Chair of the Mental Health Committee for the Michigan Association of School Psychologists. Sara's experiences include leading school psychologists in MTSS coaching, consulting with district administrators for school improvement efforts, developing and providing professional learning around MTSS, supporting her own district in creating their academic and behavior systems, fulfilling traditional school psych responsibilities, and advocating for the expanded role of the school psychologist as a mental health provider in schools.

Scott Hutchins is the Supervisor of the School Behavioral Health Unit at the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) in the Office of Health and Safety. Scott also served as the School Mental Health and Medicaid Consultant at MDE prior to accepting his current position. Scott is a life-long learner committed to servant leadership with a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University and a Bachelor's Degree from Michigan State University in Elementary Education. Prior to MDE, Scott worked as a teacher and administrator for 20 years in various K-12 settings, including general education, special education, urban, suburban, and rural, and these experiences have provided him with a diverse perspective that informs all of his work. Given that experience, he has seen firsthand the devastating effect of poor behavioral health care for students and the disparities that exist between the advantaged and disadvantaged. Scott is mindful of the unearned benefits he has received because of a systemic structure that grants privileges to some people and withholds them from others. Scott embraces diversity and understands he has a responsibility to work daily to combat discrimination and promote the worth of everyone. Scott is passionate about being a champion for ALL learners and is driven by a commitment to advocate for Michigan's students and families who have less access to needed resources.

The educational landscape is fraught with stress these days. School psychologists are at increased risk for burnout, making self-care essential. Participants will learn the “what, why, and how” of self-care, recognize that self-care doesn’t have to add to one’s to-do list, and realize that neuroplasticity makes it possible to hardwire a self-care mindset.

Participants will:

Understand compassion fatigue
Realize self-compassion is self-care
Learn the “what, why & how” of practicing self-care
Understand Self-Care in a Neuropsychological Framework
Appreciate practicing self-care doesn’t have to be time-consuming
Develop a personal self-care habit
Recognize it is possible to permanently rewire the brain to be calmer & happier

PRESENTER INFORMATION:

Dr. Paula Gill Lopez is an Associate Professor at Fairfield University where she chairs the Department of Psychological and Educational Consultation and directs the school psychology program. She is a founding member of and Wellness Coordinator for the CT Center for School Safety and Crisis Preparation. In 2008 she attended her first mindfulness conference at Georgetown University and soon after trained with Jon Kabat-Zinn in the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program. Since 2016, she has researched self-care and mindfulness, published articles, book chapters, blogs, and provided webinars on the topic. She has been an invited guest on several podcasts, including The Thriving School Psychologist and NASP’s Ask the Experts series. Paula has presented over 150 professional development workshops statewide and nationally to school mental health practitioners, school nurses, teachers, administrators, members of the university, and the community at-large.

Sheri Conner, LMSW-C/SSW: Sheri has been a school social worker for 15 years. She started her career in Jackson Michigan before moving north and working for Northwest Education Services. Sheri served as the President of Region G for MASSW for two years, she also served on the Michigan Youth Suicide Prevention committee in 2020. Sheri currently works as a school social worker in a rural school district in Northern Michigan where she works with students pre-k to 12th grade with disabilities. She is the Unified Champion Schools coordinator for the district and is passionate about connecting students with disabilities to positive peers using Peer to Peer and UCS.
Nicole Wilbur LMSW Clinical and Macro, PSWC: Nicole has been providing direct services to the community for over 20 years. Nicole is currently the MASSW Communications Liaison, Therapist, Hospital Discharge Planner and owner of Self Esteem Shop. Nicole was named the Region M School Social Worker of the Year by the Michigan Association of School Social Workers (MASSW) in March 2017. Additionally, she has experience in homecare, hospice, palliative care and brain injury. She has enjoyed expanding her passion of presenting to Social Workers and other stakeholders through Macomb Community College, the MASSW, ARC, Adair Consulting and numerous other venues throughout her career in an effort to share knowledge and tools with community members that will help foster positive personal growth, resilience and success that will ultimately reverberate throughout the community as a whole.
Tara Lovejoy MSW, LMSW: Compassionate and motivated School Social Worker with 34 years of experience supporting students’ social, emotional, and academic growth. Skilled in crisis intervention, mental health counseling, behavior management, and collaborating with teachers and families to create supportive learning environments. Adept at developing individualized strategies to enhance student well-being and academic success.

Pending MDE approval, participants may earn 1.0 SCECH/NASP CPD for attending the live event and completing the appropriate SCECHs survey within two weeks. A link to a recorded version will be provided to all registered guests. You may register and receive a link to the recording up to one year after the live event. Please note, the recording will not be available until two weeks after the event. As a result, participants can not earn SCECHs/CPDs for viewing the recorded version.
