The Michigan Association of School Psychologists strongly condemns the recent act of violence targeting Temple Israel in Michigan. Acts of hatred and intimidation directed at members of the Jewish community are deeply troubling and have no place in our schools, our communities, or our society.
Violence and antisemitism affect not only those directly targeted but also the broader sense of safety and belonging that children, families, and educators need in order to learn and thrive. Incidents like this can be deeply unsettling for students and may raise fear, confusion, or questions in our school communities.
As school psychologists, we approach these moments through a trauma-informed lens. We recognize the importance of providing spaces where students feel safe, heard, and supported. We encourage educators and school leaders to respond with compassion, to acknowledge the impact of violence and hate, and to reaffirm the values of inclusion, respect, and dignity for all. NASP has a variety of free resources for talking to children about violence, which can be found here: https://www.nasponline.org/.../talking-to-children-about...
MASP stands ready to assist local school districts in Oakland County and beyond as they navigate these conversations
We stand in solidarity with all those affected by this attack, and all other acts of violent racism, antisemitism and bigotry. The Michigan Association of School Psychologists remains committed to supporting schools in fostering safe, inclusive environments where every student and family feels valued, protected, and able to belong.
